The Hidden Agenda: Stay Cool

Given how horrendously hot and humid it is outside, there’s never been a better time for an escape to an air-conditioned oasis, whether that’s a movie theatre, bookstore or museum. While it’s not exactly a packed week given the July 4 holiday, here’s a few things you can get into without breaking a sweat.

Friday, July 3

Screening — Amerikan Boy
MATCH

Head to MATCH (3400 Main) for the premiere of the film Amerikan Boy, which “follows a young Nigerian immigrant navigating identity, masculinity, family pressure, and the desire to belong in America.” Loosely based on the personal experiences of writer/director Tobe Mokolo, a Nigerian who immigrated to America, the night begins with a red carpet event at 6:15 p.m. and the screening begins at 7 p.m. Tickets for the screening are $17.

Friday, July 3

Tango Night
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Join The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1001 Bissonnet) for their monthly Tango Night as a part of Happy Hour Friday. Not only can you sip on a drink, mingle with the local tango community, and join in on the fun, but you can also explore the galleries until 9 p.m. The event, which is included with museum admission, features a 30-minute introduction to tango at 5 p.m., followed by open social dancing at 5:30 p.m.

Sunday, July 5

Theory Social — Keats’s Odes by Anahid Nersessian
Basket Books & Art

Join the reading group at Basket Books & Art (115 Hyde Park Blvd.), known as Theory Social, as they discuss Keats’s Odes: A Lover’s Discourse, a book of personal essays about the English poet John Keats, written by Anahid Nersessian. The group meets from 3 to 5 p.m.

Sleepaway Camp: The Midnight Mass Experience
River Oaks Theatre

Whether you’ve seen it a million times before or are one of the uninitiated, you won’t want to miss this one-night-only live event and screening of the 1983 cult horror classic Sleepaway Camp at River Oaks Theatre (2009 West Gray). The event features an opening drag performance, a live onstage conversation with Felissa Rose, Midnight Mass co-host Michael Varrati, and Peaches Christ, followed by an ’80s Camp Costume Contest. After the live show, enjoy a screening of Sleepaway Camp on the big screen. The event begins at 7 p.m. and tickets start at $26.
