Running Late

No time to say hello, goodbye - we’re late, we’re late, we’re late. The week has already started, the clock’s already moving, and somehow you’re still catching up. Houston is up to its usual tricks, hiding events in plain sight, urging you to hurry up and slow down at the same time.

Anyway, here are some events!

Tuesday, 02/17

Grown Up Storytime | 8:00 PM
Continental Club | 3714 Main St

It’s that time of the month again, when we all gather in a music venue to hear people read stories written by other people in an expression of creativity and togetherness and stuff. GUST is a good time, so get your tickets, grab a drink, and enjoy the evening.

Don’t forget to support GUST in their efforts to keep the show rolling out by donating or buying a season pass

Wednesday, 02/18

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thursday, 02/19

Lecture: Carissa Rodriguez | 6:00 PM
Sarofim Hall, Pitman Cinema Theatre, Rice University | 6100 Main St

NYC-based artist Carissa Rodriguez heads to Rice University on Thursday to share aspects of her practice in the visiting artist lecture series. In her practice, Rodriguez explores the social conditions under which art is produced and consumed in relation to the materials used.

Talk: Matisse: Art in a Time of Turmoil | 7:00 PM
The Menil Collection | 533 Sul Ross St

Head on down to the Menil for another Matisse treat as Author Christopher C. Gorham and Rebecca Rabinow chat about Matisse’s life and practice amidst the German occupation of France and how he navigated deep personal anxieties while creating some of his most iconic works.

Navigating The Archives Within | 7:30 PM

Aurora Picture Show | 5601A Navigation Blvd

Aurora hosts an experimental live performance and media work by Francis and Anthony Almendárez, exploring the gaps between memory, official narrative, and marginalized history. The performance will feature Francis Almendárez, Anthony Almendárez, Gabriel Martinez, Ivette Román-Roberto, Juan Garcia, Brandon Willis, and Xavier Gilmore.

Friday, 02/20

Gulf Coast Reading | 7:00 PM

Lawndale Art Center | 4912 Main St

You know the drill; it’s another evening with the poetry and prose of students and visiting writers as the journal shines a spotlight on writers both emerging and emerged.

Saturday, 02/21

Interval | 4:00 - 8:00 PM

Someone’s house, I think | 3822 Luca St

Curated by our dear friend Jessi Bowman, Interval is a one-day exhibition exploring the pause between moments through photography and mixed media. It features work by Kaima Marie Akarue, Keliy Anderson-Staley, William Bossen, & Simon Silva as well as a performance by Isabella Mireles Vik with Emily Wang (both of Aufheben fame).

T Lavois Thiebad & Joe Wozny & Únies Gonzalez | 8:00 PM
Stinson House | 2718 Ruth St

Head on over to Nick’s house for an evening of poetry, music, bread, and other such things. T Lavois will perform spoken work among soundscapes while Joe plays guitar I assume.  I’m not sure what Únies will be doing, but she seems rad from our limited interactions.
