The Hidden Agenda: Pool Party and Sun Ra

Well here we are at the beginning of June. Graduates are kicked out of the proverbial nest and out to fend for themselves and its time to figure it out.  Hope you aren’t looking to be or got your degree in arts writing because I can tell you right now in 10 more years you might be a hundreddollaraire. If you are lucky!  The youngsters are out of school and all up in your business, so now you have to wake up at 4am if you want a few hours to get shit done. The weather isn’t so terrible yet, at least for another few weeks.  While we don’t get summer vacation as adults unless you are a teacher, maybe you saved up some of your PTO and vacation days.  Get out there and get wild. Its pool weather, Pride Celebrations are popping off, and you finally get to bust out those booty shorts. There are a bounty of summer wonders for you to discover.  Become that child running through the field at night trying to catch fireflies.  Make some lemonade from scratch.  Get that raised planter bed in order and finally lay out those pavers you said you would do last fall.  The blue sky is the limit!  Here is your Hidden Agenda week in review.

Jazz on Film June 5 - 21.  Truly my favorite part of the year and coveted  film series.  Curated and founder of Jazz on Film Peter Lucas, without a doubt, selects some of the rarest and cherished films featuring, about, or scored by some of the most exceptional musicians of our time.  Lace up those shoes and get over for this film, the next night, then the next, and the next.

“Celebrating the centennials of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Jazz on Film presents Elevator to the Gallows, including a short recorded performance by Davis, who scored the film. Also featured are documentaries illuminating the lives and music of Sun Ra, Billy Strayhorn, and Mary Lou Williams, plus rare short films”.

Sun Ra: Do the Impossible | 7PM

Houston’s premiere of Christine Turner’s new 2025  documentary is out this Saturday! Sun Ra is by far one of the quintessential experimental Jazz musicians of all time.  A level of highs and lows, deeply meditative, and mind blowing sounds will consume your soul upon dropping his record on the turn table. Everytime and new transformative experience. Christine Turners newest documentary has been highly awaited and now you have your chance to see it!

“An inspiring portrait of the complex man and multifaceted artist whose audacious vision, otherworldly imagination, and uncompromising artistry helped to reshape the cultural landscape for generations. Sun Ra produced more than 200 albums, stretching the boundaries of free-form jazz while weaving interstellar metaphors and historic and scientific musings into a singular vision of Afrofuturism. Exploring Ra’s youth, jazz roots, musical innovations, and ceaseless artistic and social quests, the film incorporates recollections from devoted Arkestra musicians and dancers and a plethora of unforgettable archival interviews and performance footage of Ra”.

Teatro Loft: El corazón del incauto | 5PM

Match Houston / Theater 2 | 3400 Main st.

"The Heart of the Gullible" is a poetic and piercing drama that plunges into the depths of desire, identity, and sacrifice. Set in rural Argentina in the 1920s, a farming couple weaves dreams of family and redemption, while truth emerges like a wound too deep to mend. What begins as a yearning for love and belonging transforms into a dance between tenderness and betrayal, where each stitch in a dress unveils forbidden threads. A moving tale that beats with the pulse of those brave enough to love beyond the rules.
