Clowns, Creatures, and Other Conundrums
It’s one of those weeks where nothing lines up, and nothing is certain, but you’ve still got plenty to do with some breathers to recharge, rewind, and recoup spent energy before you dive into a busy weekend. Sound, spectacle, and secret gatherings but only after the dull hum of blank spaces buzzing below the surface.
Anyway, here are some events.
Monday, 9/29
They, Who Sound | 7:00 PM
Lawndale Art Center | 4912 Main St
They, Who Sound kicks off the week again with sets by Unicorn and Flexibility as well as the group of Laura Dykes, Tim Hagans, and Joe Wozny. Get your weekly dose of experimental sound and general art music for the low, low price of your time (or a donation to support the program).
Tuesday, 9/30
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There’s not much on my radar this Tuesday, but check out the tons of events going on in the Houston Public Library System or you can check out this yoga class at Discovery Green.
Wednesday, 10/01
Scared Silly | 8:00 PM
Two-Headed Dog | 3100 Fannin St
This one’s not for the coulrophobic. Kick off spooky season with some clown fetishism at Scared Silly, presented by Clowntown Cabaret at Two Headed Dog. Oh, it’s sure to be an evening of mischief with games, clown-themed burlesque, a sideshow, and as always the delicious drinks by the dog.
Thursday, 10/02
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - read a damn book
Friday, 10/03
Queer Teen Night | 6:00 PM
CAMH | 5216 Montrose Blvd
Teens only, but LGBTQ+ and allies welcome at this event inspired by the on view exhibitions. You teens who are surely following Flak Magazine will have the opportunity to grow your queer community, learn more about the exhibitions on teen-led tours, and even style a utility belt under the guidance of De La Nada Queer Collective.
Saturday, 10/04
The First of Failed Spells | 6:00 PM
Stinson House | 2718 Ruth St
Head on over to home-turned-gallery/event space Stinson House this Saturday for an event or opening or both!? You’ll see zines, sculptures, and a concert by the duo The First of Failed Spells with an opening set by Katy Manning.
Film Screening: La Belle et la Bête | 7:30 PM
Menil Collection Lawn | 1533 Sul Ross St
Pop a squat on the Menil lawn to watch Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête, a surrealist reimagining of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast released in 1946, taking something from your childhood and turning it into a poetic exploration of love and illusion instead of a fever dream of singing inanimate objects (or they might still do that - haven’t seen it yet).
Opening: Re-Figurations | 6:00 PM
Site Gallery Houston (at the Silos) | 1502 Sawyer St, Suite 400
Sculpture Month Houston is back with its 9th annual exhibition Re-Figurations. This iteration explores the transformations in figure representation that began in Modernism, through Cubism’s redefinition of figurative concepts, and beyond. The 18 artists involved deconstruct, fragment, and reconstruct the human form in oh so many ways through their investigative installations.
Participating artists include Victor Calise Blanchard, Elizabeth Chapin, Celia Eberle, Dave Greber, Clara Hoag, Iva Kinnaird, Dion Laurent, Tala Madani, Jack Massing, Patrick Medrano, McKay Otto, Emily Peacock / Patrick Renner, Jonathan Read, Chris Sauter, James Sullivan, Kamila Szczesna, and Nestor Topchy.
Amanda Ekery: 'Árabe' | 7:30 PM
Asia Society Texas | 1370 Southmore Blvd
Tuck in for an evening of music and storytelling as Amanda Ekery and her band showcase their new album and book Árabe. Through Árabe, Ekery explores the cultural and historical connection points of Syria and Mexico. The group will perform songs from the album, breaking down the stories behind the tracks.
