The Hidden Agenda: Wake up and panic
Wake up late and throw on whatever clothes you can find floating about your room. A pair of pants with a pizza sauce stain on the leg is laying over the back of the chair and will do nicely. Wadded up under your desk is the wrinkled button down that will secure the lost bohemian vibe. It smells of cigarette smoke and maybe onions. For whatever reason, there is a half eaten bagel in your shoe but a quick turn, and it's returned to its natural habitat, which happens to be your bedroom floor. Running down the hall with your pants half on as you hop on one leg, you slide sideways into the bathroom. Comb…comb…comb, no comb! Your wet hands and fingers will work just fine. A splash of water on your face and a dollop of toothpaste on your finger and about your mouth is close enough to a brush. Looking in the mirror, at best you channel Tom Watts after a weekend bender. That’ll work. After all, you enjoy a raspy Tom melody. Tripping over the cat, you catapult to the floor and land on your lunch bag, mashing the contents into a putty. No time! Cat’s ok at a glance as you careen down the hallway towards the door on all fours. You whip open the door just to see that yellow school bus of yours soaring down the street right before your dark ringed racoon eyes. Oh, there is your friend Michael giving you the finger from the back open window. Well shit. Welcome back to the new school year. With a sigh you think, “ at least there is another Hidden Agenda to look forward to”. “Up yours too Michael”!

Gust 197 is here with the delightful Shaniya Warfield as MC. If you’ve been, you know its a roller coaster ride of emotions. Well written stories read in turn by creatives, literaries, and community members. Some funny and some devastating, a roll of the dice but always an exquisite time. If you haven’t been, well hell you are in for a treat. Get your tickets early online or at the door night of. Just get there early and gear up for a well rounded evening.

Amanda KM: as ppl carry them will unfold in and outside the galleries at Lawndale over the next year. In the first part of the project, the public is invited to join the artist on Wednesdays-Saturdays (September 16-26) from 12-2 PM in a collaborative-quasi-installation-recording-booth in the Grace R. Cavnar Gallery.
Activating all spaces of the gallery with objects and images that remind us of those who came before us. Viewers will be encouraged to leave an object or token of self for the artist for the duration of their visit or longer. A sound booth will record the visitors’ voices as they speak about practices they are carrying that continue to live inside them, whether enacted or not.

It's Gala time for the Art League and that means celebrating all that is wonderful with Houston’s finest non profit arts organization. Celebrating Jamal Cyrus as 2026 Artist of the Year, Cesar A. Martinez as Lifetime Achievement Award in Visual Arts, and Surpik Angelina as Lifetime Achievement Award in Arts Leadership, and Joe Diaz as Patron of the Year. Whew! So many greats all in one place. To kick off this years Gala, Art League Houston celebrates its selected artist with two outstanding shows. Everyone will be there and you should be too!

I've always been an immense fan of absurdist theatre and of my favorites are the works of Eugene Ionesco. Calculated fever dreams presented before us. Pure philosophical poetry of everyday absurdities. Tamarie Cooper directs Ionesco’s classic with the celebrated Theatre group and whimsically twisted minds of Catastrophic. Pure power of raging rhinos terrorizing the town French town square as two friends try to enjoy coffee. Turn away or brush it off once, but twice, now three times? This post war avante-garde drama is proclaimed as one of Ionesco’s classic plays deconstructing facism, conformity, and morality. Although running through October 10th, don’t sleep on this one!

The power trio of Bayou City Waterkeepers, FOTOFEST, and Latino Outdoors have organized a delightful morning at Robert C. Stuart Park. A walk exploring the connections among water, birds, people, and places. Bring your point and shoot, digital cameras, or just your phone. Want to enjoy the moment for what it is? Just show up with a light mind and full heart and take in as much as you can. No equipment needed.

Alex Cox of the legendary Repo Man brings forth this gritty western filled with as much poetic beauty as raw carnage shimmering through the dust clouds of the old west landscape. A 2025 adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s novel of the same name, Cox brings his own touch of dark satire and picaresque subtleties. This looks great and it's always a pleasure to find a chance to support Houston’s best Art House Theatre.
