Grown Up Story Time is back again this week with a soon-to-be announced set of stories. You’ll laugh; you’ll cry; you’ll wonder whether it’s time for you to submit a story of your own. (It is!) GUST 184 will be hosted by Sara Rehman, and stories should be announced the afternoon of 8/18.

Drop-in Tour | “From India to the World: Textiles from the Parpia Collection”

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is offering a drop-in tour to learn more about the exhibition From India to the World: Textiles from the Parpia Collection. The exhibition is a showcase of textile pieces acquired from the private collection of Banoo and Javeek Parpia, building off the 2023 exhibition Woven Wonders

Beyond Bone Broth: Tonkotsu Ramen Tasting With Tsujita Artisan Noodle

Asia Society Texas - 1370 Southmore Blvd | 6PM

Join Hitoshi Yoshihara of Sun Noodle for an in-depth exploration of tonkotsu ramen. The event will cover the history and culture surrounding the famed, soupy, delicious noodle dish. The tonkotsu variation references the rich bone broth made with pork bones, but this is a vegetarian-friendly affair with a miso ramen option. 


Circle Mirror Transformation

Spring Street Studios #233 - 1824 Spring Street | 7:30PM

Mighty Acorn Productions opens a new presentation of the Annie Baker play Circle Mirror Transformation. The play centers around an adult creative drama class at a community center in Vermont, following the students through acting/improv exercises that slowly reveal who they are - truly a theater show for theater kids.

Name of the Game with Filmmaker Q&A

River Oaks Theatre - 2009 W Gray St | 7:15PM

Head over to River Oaks Theatre for a screening of Name of the Game, a film that dives into the world of male exotic dancing from the 1980s to early 2000s to showcase the untold history of Black male exotic dancing in a way that will make you remember that one time in high school when a kid yelled “Hey, Ms Phillips, you gonna come see me at my new job? I work at Hard Bodies.”

Anti-Landfill Trash Lab with Gleeson Ryan

Contemporary Art Museum Houston - 5216 Montrose Boulevard | 2PM

If you’ve seen 28 Years Later, you know that even in the post-apocalypse, there’s always art supplies if you look at the world the right way. The CAMH invites you to an open studio in the pre-post-apocalypse that will teach you how to repurpose plastics and keep them out of landfills. Participants can walk away with a vessel all their own and the knowledge to pass on, produce, and reuse/reduce.

Educator Workshop: Weaving Through Cultures

In partnership with Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as Glassell School of Art instructor Vehishta Kaikobad, Asia Society invites educators to learn how to introduce textiles as a medium of instruction at various levels. The workshop aims to craft an environment that encourages global learning, multicultural understanding, worldwide trading, and beyond.

Summer Studios Artist Talks

The Eldorado Ballroom (at PRH) - 2310 Elgin Street | 6PM 

Summer Studios is in full effect, an elaborate and encouraging residency program that offers mentorship, studio space, and artistic support to participating emerging artists. Hear directly from the participants as they proffer talks and performances that shed light and give insight to the inspiration behind their installations. 

2025 participating artists include Haley Jackson, Marshall Bradley, Kaviya Ravikumar, Josh Peterson, Janice Newsum, Kamryn Sterling, Isabel Sanchez, Celeste Francis, Giuliana Velez, Goodnews Nwankwo, and Yijun Huang.
