Spring and Sprung

Spring has sprung!  Open up those windows, purge your house of all the stale winter air, and pull out your jelly sandals! It's time to get outside and absorb that vitamin D. Be it a Bring Your Own Beamer event outside of the Menil or an evening performance along the Bayou, the open air experiences are here and plentiful. A time of the year in South Texas to both simultaneously install that new screen door and full up sandbags to fortify your house from the impending floods guaranteed to bless your neighborhood with an extra 2ft of water.  While it is still frowned upon in Houston to engage in the practice of walking to destinations, the option is viable if so inclined to do so.  Lather up with your SPF 200 and welcome those sun kisses, it’s time for your weekly Hidden Agenda

The Christophers | 6PM

River Oaks Theater | 2009 Gray

The conniving Sallie and Barnaby, children of famous artist Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen), hire Lori Butler (Michaela Coel), a working artist and fan of their father's work, to complete a series of famously unfinished canvases—The Christophers—so they'll have an inheritance when he dies.

In my opinion its actually difficult to find a truly great movie about a painter.  The passion and struggle get lost in big name production and poorly portrait mental collapse.  The Christophers looks to be a film to break the mold and featuring the great Sir Ian Mckellen.  There are four screenings on Wednesday and plenty more throughout the week, so you have no excuse to not go…SO DO IT!

Yes this is a member event, but all the more reason to get off your rump and become a member.  First in to see such amazing exhibitions as John Akomfrah, special talks, screenings, and more.  The Hour of the Dog is a 51 minute six channel video installation best viewed from beginning to end.   The installation explores the deep history of youth-led Civil Rights–era activism in the South from 1954 to 1963 and the individuals that fought continuously for racial equity through protests, marches, and voter registration efforts.

Green Mountain Earth Day | 12PM - 5PM

Discovery Green | 1500 McKinney St

It’s an Earth Day celebration! The green event is free for all and features community artists and projects including some of our favorite creatives and organizations.  Such featured are Magpies and Peacocks fashion show, University of Houston, Downtown art installation, Houston recycled goods artist Glee Ryan and a community art project by puppet-maker Dennis McNett of Wolfbat.  The University of Houston-Downtown will feature artwork by students from the Department of Arts and Communication displayed in an open-air gallery, inspired by environmental driven projects

“Discovery Green visitors are invited to participate in mask-making workshops inspiring them to creatively interpret the theme of Our Power, Our Planet. Using recycled materials, these masks will represent endangered animals, plants, ecosystems, natural elements or symbolic representations of the Earth. During the celebration on April 25, participants will wear their masks to join in on a public procession accompanied by 12-foot-tall puppets as part of Reclamation of the Earth created by Wolfbat.”

This is a zero waste event so bring your totebags, your own utensils, and pack in and pack out what you bring or create.
