The leaves are beginning to fall and you begin to reflect on the many months that have passed. Did you finish your book? How is your relationship journey going? Do you have any relationships? Were you able to complete all the reviews and interviews you had desired? Oh the time of year when the existential dread settles in. The trees and the nesting squirrels have an idea of what to do next. How about you? Likely not. It's the morning you wake up and think, “shit, we only have two and a half months left to the year”. Faaaaaaaeeeeeuuuuuuuckkk! Exclaimed in a Charlie Brown howl. If only you had a cosmopolitan hyper intelligent beagle to help you out when you are out in the yard kicking sticks. Can’t even afford Lucy Van Pelt’s psychiatric booth these days. Your damn insurance no longer covers it, and the out of pocket is hundreds of dollars above the nickel she was once charging. You opened up your email and all you got was a rock. The bears have a pretty great idea if you take a moment to ponder. Get real active and cranky, binge eat, put on double your weight, and then sleep in a cave for five or so months. Rinse and Repeat. So I hope you didn’t come here for all the answers because I have little to none for you. However, Houston is always active in the “ it's almost sort of chilly if you are standing in the frozen aisle of HEB” months. It's the last shebang of October and this is your Hidden Agenda for the week.

Naomi Watts stars in this wonderfully bizarre classic from director David Lynch. There is a plot and a bit of a story line with a whole lot of wtf is happening to be expected. Lynch would present nothing less than a dark and disturbing twist of reality.

Box 13 Opening Night / 6PM - 9PM
Box 13 Art Space / 6700 Harrisburg
Another lively batch of openings at the beloved Box 13 in the East End! This Friday opens three exhibitions all looking rather engaging.
Slow Season : Heather den Uijl and Hillaree Hamblin
exploring themes of introspection, adaptation, and stillness through the lens of nature and abstraction.
Lands’ Brooches : Dongyi Wu
Spatial logic beyond adornment: a way of setting apart a field within a larger land.
Chris Wicker: Like Apple Pie
Soft sculpture, video, and coll.age to continue Wicker’s exploration on the intersections between Christian evangelicalism, harmful white southern culture, and American consumerism.
Candice D’Meza / Sarah Fox | 6PM - 8PM
Lawndale Art Center | 4912 Main St.
So many openings but how do we find the time! Well figure it out ding dong. These two openings are going to be worth checking out.
Sarah Fox opens up Untangling the Snare in the Cecily E. Horton Gallery. Fox has woven sculpture, puppetry, performance into a two-act fable of my own making, Untangling the Snare. Archetypal hybrid creatures take form as marionettes and masks, culminating in a video work and live performance. Through these multi-media vessels, a folk tale of female solidarity and escape is born. Unraveling the violence against women. Though whimsical and fantastic, a story of solidarity, strength, and perseverance is revealed.
Intergalactic Liberation Bureau: Archive 001 is a new exhibition by Candice D’Meza opening up this Friday. through experimental, participatory performance and installation that reimagines bureaucracy as a site of cosmic possibility, D’Meza lays the foundation. A Quantum Control Room helmed by Zeta, a Cosmic File Keeper, the Bureau assembles fragmented bureaucratic forms and mundane office trivialities into an encounter with freedom.
Saturday, 10/31
Susan Budge / Artist Panel | 1PM - 2PM
Karin Broker Studio at Delz | 506 Delz St.
If you missed the opening at the beginning of the month and the very active artist talk, roundtable #1, panel #1, you get another Panel! Well although there appears to be lots to discuss with this exhibition Ive always enjoyed the works of sculptor Susan Budge. This panel features artists Susan Budge, Jeff Forster, and Zaynab Hilal (Curatorial Fellow HCCC). It’s Halloween! Costumes encouraged…by me.
Motoko Yasue: One’s Spirit beyond the Portal | 2PM - 3:30PM
Jung Center | 5200 Montrose Blvd.
Yasue’s new exhibit at the Jung Center depicts imaginary worlds in abstract landscapes through oil painting, watercolor and sculpture and invites the viewer to enter an inner realm of the mind, where they may find solace and strength while navigating life’s uncertain path. Promising solace sure is a heavy hitting statement. The artist should explain everything nicely and its always a nice space to visit. See the work before the talk!
Sunday, 11/01
Well Shit. It's November now, but you got that sweet extra hour of sleep.
Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston | All Day
Museum of Fine Arts Houston | 1001 Bissonnet
I’m not sure you could find a more tranquil and meaningful way to spend your Sunday than heading to the MFAH to see this exhibition of Winslow Homer works. Truly some powerful and classic paintings to reflect upon to help you forget it's already November.
“Presenting more than 45 watercolors by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), alongside a selection of his oils, drawings, and prints, Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston explores how the artist grew as a watercolorist. With material ranging from a childhood drawing to his final canvas, the exhibition follows the major chapters in his career and explores the various environments—ecological, artistic, social, and economic—that shaped his enduring work in watercolor. Homer’s watercolors capture the look and feel of a place, transporting the viewer to the rugged Maine coast, New York’s Adirondack Mountains, the English seashore, and the sunlit Caribbean”.
